Paraguay is a little country in the heart of America, that borders Bolivia, Brazil and Argentine. It has a luxuriant and uncontaminated nature and it is full of natural beauties.
Tourists and all those who decide to live permanently in Paraguay and apply for a permanent residence are really fascinated by it.
But, in addition to the beautiful landscape, Paraguay also offers a cuisine, that although is different from the American and the European ones, it offers very particular and delicious food.
Flavours, smells and colours will give you a full immersion in the South American cuisine.
Let’s discover them together!
THE TYPICAL FOOD OF PARAGUAY
The cuisine of Paraguay is especially rich in meat and lake fish: as, of course, you know Paraguay does not face the sea. Meals are always accompanied by beans, rice and corn and topped with tasty sauces.
The typical and most requested dishes, both from tourists and local people, are the “Soyo” a tasty meat and vegetable soup, the “Albondigas”, a soup with excellent meatballs and, finally, the “Asado”, that is a barbecue with beef, pig, chicken, and lamb. They merge together in an unforgettable mixture.
In addition to the previously mentioned side dishes, in Paraguay you can find cereal and manioc with meat and fish.
But we can mention a slightly more vegetarian dish: that is the “Mbejú”, a fine salty cake corn starch-based or corn flour-based. As a matter of fact, in the local dialect the term “Mbejú” means precisely “cake”. The other ingredients are: eggs, salt, milk and cream cheese.
As regards drinks, the typical ones are must and mate, but you can drink whatever you want.
Mate is a traditional Paraguayan, Argentinian and South American drink and is prepared like tea, with an infusion of cut and chopped dried yerba mate. This drink is particular, because it goes well both with salt and sweet food, fully preserving its particular taste.
And finally… desserts!
A typical dessert of Paraguay is the Kaguyjy, made with wheat, sugar and honey. In addition, you can taste the Kivevé, a particular dessert made with pumpkin and wheat flour, the Ka’i ladrillo made with peanuts and the Arró kamby, a sort of European rice pudding.
