On 18 October 2022 the Migration Law for foreigners who want to obtain permanent residence was amended, in advance of the expected date, that is in February 2023. But this modification of the law is very positive because all the advantages for those who apply for permanent residence remain unchanged.
What the amendments concerning the Permanent Residence Program in Paraguay consist of?
Below a summary and all the details of this amendment. With the new amendment, when you apply for residence, you are resident for TWO YEARS. After a two-years residence in Paraguay you can apply for permanent residence. However, immediately you receive your biometric Identity Card, that allows you to live and work in Paraguay and you can use it in all South American countries to travel without Passport.
The highlights of the modified Program for Permanent Residence in 2022
So, after a two-year residence in Paraguay, you can apply for permanent residence.
To obtain a two-year residence, you just have to DECLARE to practise a profession or to have the money needed to support yourself financially in Paraguay, but for the two-year residence you do not have to prove it.
SO, COMPARED TO THE PAST, YOU NO LONGER NEED TO DEPOSIT USD 5000 IN THE CENTRAL BANK TO PROVE YOU CAN SUPPORT YOURSELF FINANCIALLY IN PARAGUAY.
In summary, you just have to submit 3 documents to apply for permanent residence:
- Apostilled Birth Certificate
- Apostilled Penal Certificate
- Apostilled Marriage Certificate (if you are married) or Free Status Certificate
All those who apply for residence (that is a two-years residence) for the first time, also receive a Paraguayan biometric Identity Card and enjoy the same rights of all those who reside in Paraguay permanently. For example, everything is the same for tax code, residence tax, as well as for all matters of international tax compliance.
The effect of this change is that you have to carry out 4 processes instead of 2 to obtain permanent residence in Paraguay, but actually you only have to make two trips, as before of the entry into force of the new law.
