PARAGUAY: AN ISOLATED COUNTRY IS STRONGER AGAINST CORONAVIRUS

09/06/2020 By admin

The geographical isolation of Paraguay, a landlocked country with a moderate air traffic, if we compare it to the one of the major Southamerican cities, actually turned into a great resource in the battle against Coronavirus, as both epidemiologists and health authorities  highlighted.

As a matter of fact, almost all positive cases come from abroad and Paraguay has a minimum number of cases in its population.

For example, if we consider the day of May 25th, we see that Paraguay had only 3 new cases for a total of 865 cases and deaths were only 11.

We must also take into account that about a month ago the Government of Paraguay refused to welcome Chinese people and also all foreigners coming from China.

Schools were also closed, commercial flights were cancelled and on March 17th  the borders with Brazil were closed.

In this regard, the Minister of Heath reported that Paraguay was saved because this country decided to act immediately and stop the main sources of infection. If Paraguay had not done it, there would be more than 15 000 cases throughout the country.

Also the Responsible of the Emergency Intensive Care Unit expressed this conviction and he reaffirmed that isolation and quarantine were decisive to avoid a peak of cases.

Lockdown avoided a collapse, considering also the fact that in Paraguay the peak of virus is expected to arrive in July and August.

We must not forget that World Health Organization recently declared that now South America is the new epicenter of global pandemic and just for this reason Paraguay maintained an impeccable behaviour establishing effective containment measures to fight against Coronavirus.

In Paraguay from 25th of May has begun the second phase of the “intelligent quarantine”, that is a slow and progressive return to usual activities. A third phase is also planned, which should start in mid- June and by then team sports will be practiced again and places of worship will be reopened.

Government allocated the sum of 16 millions of dollars to fight pandemic, which come from both investments in Health System and Social Assistance. In 30 days the Paraguayan Government succeeded in building 2 hospitals with 200 rooms each, even if the hospitalised patients in the last week end were at most 7.

When pandemic began, Paraguay had at its disposal 800 intensive care units  for 7,2 millions of people, 12 000 doctors and 20 000 nurses.

The real threat for Paraguay consists of Brazil, a country where cases are multiplying at sight and which divides a wide border with Paraguay.

Paraguayan epidemiologists repeatedly condemned Brazil’s senseless behaviour, which now is paying a high price and affirm that the only salvation for Paraguay is to keep its borders closed.

On the contrary, for Argentine the balance is very positive and also this country is reacting well against this terrible epidemic.

In the next weeks Paraguay will wait the return of more than 25000 of its fellow citizens together with many argentine and Brazilian people, who lost their jobs in their country and are finding a job in Paraguay.

Of course, all these people must undergo a strict quarantine and some hotels have been prepared for people coming from abroad.
