According to official data from the Center of River and Maritime Shipowners of Paraguay (CAFyM), there are approximately 3,445 Paraguayan-flagged vessels operating in the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway. These vessels consist of approximately 2,700 bulk barges, 247 tank barges, and 33 container barges.
The fleet of self-propelled vessels includes 380 tugboats and 85 ships with their own propulsion, including container ships and tanker ships. In 2018, six new tugboats were added to the Paraguayan fleet, namely the “Enrico H,” “Valentina H,” and “Dr. Salgado H” from the Horamar company. Additionally, the flagship of the Paraguayan shipbuilding industry, the tugboat “YERUTI-I” from Naviera Yerutí, and the tugboat “TEBICUARY 03” built at the Tsuneishi Shipyard were incorporated into the fleet of NAVESUR. The tugboat “SHEILA J,” constructed in the Netherlands and added to the Cargoline shipping company, also joined the fleet.
Paraguay has the third-largest river fleet of vessels globally, after the United States and China, and the largest river fleet in South America. However, according to Juan Carlos Muñoz Menna, not all bulk barges are fully utilized due to the impact of recent commodity and iron ore price fluctuations.
In 2018, the total volume of cargo transported on Paraguayan-flagged vessels reached 23 million tons, which was 1.5 million tons more than in 2017. It is expected that the volume of transported cargo will continue to increase gradually in the coming years.
