Families are settling in Hohenau and also in Obligado and Bella Vista, communities founded by Germans which have a large part of their population of German origin.
It is not possible to pinpoint the number of new Germans in the area, but many are settling in the region.
A large number of Europeans arrive to settle in the United Colonies area, Department of Itapúa. The migratory phenomenon has been underway for about three years, but above all it has become more evident in recent months and in recent days.
Whole families are settling in Hohenau and also in Obligado and Bella Vista, communities founded by Germans which have a large part of their population of German origin who retain their language, their customs and traditions, a situation which facilitates the integration of those who come from Germany.
Among the immigrants there is a greater presence of Germans, but Russians, Belgians and Poles also arrive. Given the origin of these so-called United Colonies, from time to time there is a wave of European immigration, mainly Germans. This already happened during the First World War, around the years 1914-1917, and during the Second World War, between 1939 and 1945. In the case of the Second World War, after the end of the war, many immigrants who had escaped Nazism arrived in Hohenau and in the other colonies, but also Nazis arrived who were protected in the area and who then took root there and today many families are their descendants.
But there are many German people who come to the area, many of them are pensioners in their country or people who are tired of living in their big German cities, or because they can’t pay that country’s high taxes. Even producers from rural areas come and do the same here. They also find in this area a lot of peace, tranquillity, natural beauty and low taxes, as well as facilities to enter because they already known German customs and language.
Immigrants settle quickly and work in various businesses, from agricultural production to apartment building and renting. Some engage in earthmoving work with machinery imported from their country that arrives in containers. This is the case of Rudy, installed in Obligado three years ago and that enabled a lot of work in this last area.
The current German surge occurs for various reasons, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the situation that has arisen in Afghanistan.
Due to the Covid issue, many German people come because they don’t want to be vaccinated and they don’t want their children to be vaccinated, which is why many families come with children and teenagers. Others come to the area because there is massive immigration of Muslims and Islamists to several European countries, especially Germany, according to Renius Becker, a Paraguayan of German origin who lives in Hohenau.
Becker, like other descendants, are contacts to which Germans go looking for land or a plot of land on which to build their houses and live there. Some German people come without their family. They scout the place, buy some land, build their house, then go back to Germany and bring their whole family here. Numerous people from Colonias Unidas are selling part of their land plots to American people.
