Residency in Paraguay: Which Required Documents Do You Need?
The advisors of Living in Paraguay (LIP) want to clarify which required documents you must bring to Paraguay. This guide is essential for those moving to South America. Since the implementation of Law 6984/22, the first step is obtaining Temporary Residency for two years. After this period, you may apply for permanent status.
Understanding the Apostille Process
Before traveling, you must legalize your certificates. Paraguay belongs to the Hague Convention. This means you need an “Apostille.” The Apostille is a formal legalization that makes your documents valid abroad. Without this stamp, Paraguayan authorities cannot accept your certificates.
1. The Birth Certificate
LIP asks clients for a Multilingual Birth Certificate. This format follows the Vienna Convention. It includes the names of your parents in different languages.
- Action: You must apostille this document at the Prefecture of your residence.
- Why? The multilingual format ensures Paraguayan offices accept the details immediately.
2. Criminal Record Certificate
You must prove your legal standing. There are different types of records, but for the residency process, we need your Criminal Record. This document shows any definitive convictions.
- Action: Like the birth certificate, this must be apostilled at the Prefecture.
- Verification: We recommend sending us a digital copy before your trip. Our legal team will check it to ensure everything is correct. This prevents delays and ensures a smooth application.
The Path to Your Identity Card (Cédula)
Once you present the required documents, you will receive your temporary residency. This status allows you to obtain your electronic Identity Card. With the Cédula, you can live and work in Paraguay legally. It also allows you to travel across Latin America without a passport.
LIP is the only European certified company in this sector. We are registered in Estonia, and EU law guarantees our contracts. We guide you step by step through all the paperwork for your change of residence.
