Second life

Second Life in Paraguay Learn about Residency, Quality of Life, Lower Taxes

When my family arrived in Asunción, they were worried about what they would find. I had already been living in Paraguay for several months, but I think they did not fully believe my reassuring words.

My youngest son, Mario, looked at everything with suspicion. My older son was more curious, but Mario did not want to leave his mother or me during the first days.

Today, we all laugh about those fears. My children often joke about how nervous they were when they arrived in what is now their home.

They quickly made friends at school. Our neighbors welcomed us warmly, and the children never missed the comforts they had in Spain. That is why sharing information is important. Good information helps people overcome unnecessary fears.

We first moved to Paraguay because of the economic advantages, especially the tax benefits. However, we stayed because of the people and the quality of life.

Paraguayans are proud of their hospitality. They naturally try to make visitors feel comfortable and welcome. That attitude made our transition much easier.

Starting a new life in Paraguay

After arriving in Paraguay, I first applied for temporary residency. Later, after completing the legal requirements, I was able to obtain permanent residency.

The process required several documents, including:

  • A birth certificate
  • A criminal background certificate
  • Civil status documents
  • Additional documents for our children

For the children, we also had to provide a legal affidavit. At first, I found it surprising, but later I understood it was a protection measure for minors.

The entire process was easier because of the common language. Spanish is the main language in Paraguay, although Guaraní is also widely spoken, especially outside Asunción.

Of course, some local expressions created funny misunderstandings at the beginning. Certain words sounded completely different from what we expected. Still, we adapted quickly.

I must admit there are still some Guaraní words that I cannot pronounce correctly.

Residency and citizenship opportunities

Our next step will be applying for Paraguayan citizenship. After legally residing in Paraguay for the required period and meeting the conditions established by law, foreign residents may apply for naturalization.

For us, obtaining a second passport represents more freedom for travel and more security for our family’s future.

We also met several Italian families who successfully obtained dual citizenship in Paraguay. They described the process as much simpler and faster than in many European countries.

Technology keeps families connected

At first, my parents and in-laws struggled with our decision. Later, they realized that even if we had stayed in Spain, they still would not see the children every day because we all lived in different cities.

Now we stay connected through video calls, voice messages, and apps like Telegram. Mario still falls asleep listening to bedtime stories recorded by his grandfather.

Technology made distance much easier for everyone.

Retirement and quality of life in Paraguay

After visiting us several times, my in-laws started considering moving to Paraguay too.

They realized they could enjoy their Spanish pension with a much lower cost of living. Life in Asunción offers:

  • Affordable healthcare
  • Lower daily expenses
  • A relaxed lifestyle
  • Friendly people
  • Greater financial freedom

In Spain, inflation was slowly reducing their purchasing power. In Paraguay, they could enjoy a more comfortable retirement without sacrificing quality of life.

Why our second life was worth it

Moving abroad always creates uncertainty. Leaving your comfort zone is never easy.

Still, this second life gave us opportunities we never expected. We kept the best parts of our life in Spain while discovering a new country full of possibilities.

Paraguay gave us more time, more peace of mind, and a better balance between work, family, and personal freedom.

Looking back, we would make the same decision again without hesitation.
